What's Changed?

Microsoft has announced the deprecation of Basic Authentication for Exchange Online which is part of the Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suite of products.

This change requires the email authentication method for enterprise applications and databases to migrate to new industry standard, Open Authorization 2.0 (OAUTH2).  This will impact email dependent workflows including email notifications and approvals for most enterprise applications in use today which rely on basic authentication.

Deadline is Closing

A one-time re-enablement option of Basic Authentication is available from Microsoft through December 31, 2022.

The deadline is rapidly approaching.  Rimini Street has seamless solutions and also provides consulting on more complex solutions. Any of these solutions requires a minimum of implementation time, so contact your Client Success Manager to assure that you do not have any disruption of email services after December 31, 2022.

Rimini Connect for Email

Rimini Connect for Email is a seamless solution designed to ensure compatibility with Microsoft Exchange Online.  This product is fully supported by Rimini Street and is configured by our solutions architects.  Additionally, Rimini Connect for Email also allows clients to benefit from the security of OAUTH2 over the open internet.

Rimini Connect for Email will translate the Basic Authentication protocols into Open Authorization 2.0 (OAUTH2) protocols. The same Basic Authentication configuration is still used by the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.  However, instead of sending the messages to the Exchange Online service directly, the messages are now sent to the Rimini Connect server (client hosted) which will convert the message to OAUTH2 and relay it to the Exchange Online service. You will continue to use your existing Exchange Online services with no changes to the ERP system except to send email to a different host.

This solution is installed, configured, and maintained by Rimini Street and would require a separate Statement of Work (SOW) agreement with the client.

Future-Proof your investment

OAUTH 2.0 is currently the industry-standard protocol for authorization.  The IETF OAUTH Working Group is already working on features needed in OAUTH 2.1 and beyond.  It’s only a matter of time before the industry standard is once again updated, forcing additional changes in your ERP environment.

Future versions of Rimini Connect for Email will support the evolving industry standards as our customers need to maintain peace of mind, and control over your ERP roadmap.
