Mal Meninga

Former Rugby League Player

Mal Meninga is one of Rugby League’s most iconic figures, renowned not only for his formidable playing career but also for his exceptional leadership on and off the field.

As a player, Meninga captained both Queensland and the Australian Kangaroos with distinction, earning a reputation for strength, composure, and inspiration under pressure. He led Queensland in the State of Origin arena to several famous series victories and was the first player to captain Australia in two Kangaroo Tours (1990 and 1994), both undefeated.

Following his playing days, Meninga transitioned seamlessly into coaching, becoming the Head Coach of the Queensland Maroons in 2006. Under his leadership, the Maroons achieved an unprecedented eight consecutive State of Origin series wins from 2006 to 2013, solidifying his legacy as a master motivator and tactician.

In 2016, Meninga was appointed head coach of the Australian national team, guiding the Kangaroos to victory in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. His influence on the game, especially in cultivating a strong, respectful, and united team culture, has made him one of the most respected leaders in Rugby League history.

From 2027, Mal will take on the role as Head Coach of the NRL expansion team, Perth Bears, vacating his role at the Kangaroos which he has held for almost a decade. For the Bears, Mal will be instrumental in building a high-performance culture from scratch.
