FAQs
Is vCenter no longer offered as a perpetual license?
No, vCenter is no longer offered as a perpetual license. VMware, now under Broadcom, announced the end of sale of vCenter perpetual licenses in December 2023 and are now only offering a subscription-based model. Once support for your version of vCenter ends, you will no longer receive access to patches and updates from Broadcom, unless you’ve been given a grace period.
The end of perpetual licenses for VMware products has caused several challenges for IT leaders. However, this disruption presents a unique opportunity to rethink your virtualization and infrastructure strategy. Learn more about the paths, pros and cons that exist for maintaining, migrating or modernizing your VMware estate in our report, “Capitalize on the VMware Disruption: It’s an Opportunity to Modernize”
When is Broadcom ending general support for vCenter 7?
Broadcom ended its general support for vCenter 7 perpetual licenses on October 2, 2025.
When is the end of support date for vCenter 8?
The official End of General Support (EoGS) date for vCenter Server 8.x perpetual licenses is October 11, 2027. After this date, Broadcom will no longer provide regular maintenance updates, security patches or technical assistance for vCenter 8.x, along with ESXi 8.x and vSan 8.x.
What are my available options for ongoing vCenter support?
If you don’t currently have support for your vCenter environment, your options are:
- Transition some or all your estates to an alternative hypervisor or pursue a hybrid VM/containerization model
- Upgrade to one of Broadcom’s available subscription bundles
- Support your VMware environment in-house
