Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) is the second-largest district in Pennsylvania. However, it is also losing students as families leave the region, and it faces increasingly tight budgets. To keep educational standards high while reducing overall spending, management scrutinized the IT budget with an eye to reducing it at least 15 percent. Annual vendor maintenance and support fees for the PeopleSoft system were an obvious target. PPS was not using all modules, yet the vendor would not consider reducing fees. The decision to move to independent support came shortly after the vendor indicated that a rate hike was imminent.
PPS IT staff carefully vetted Rimini Street references and was impressed by a high level of support that transcended standard break/fix and also included support for customizations and regular tax, legal and regulatory updates. An immediate 50 percent reduction in support fees helped stabilize the PPS budget, enabling the district to continue its investment in Excellence for All educational programs.
